OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Some of Central Florida’s tradesman unions are joining forces to build homes for homeless veterans in Osceola County.
Here’s what you should know about the homes:
1. The Green Vistas Veteran Village will be a community made of tiny homes for homeless vets in Osceola County. These tiny homes are made from old shipping containers that will be about 800 square feet.
2. Currently Green Vistas is working to obtain 5-10 acres of land in Osceola County for the Vet Village.
3. Each tiny home takes about three months to make.

Some Central Florida counties fared better than others when it came to housing affordability in third-quarter 2019.
Irvine, California-based Attom Data Solutions released its Q3 2019 home affordability report, which found that not all Florida counties are equal when it comes to providing affordable housing. The company analyzed more than 498 counties in the U.S. to generate an index on which markets in America had the most and least affordable housing, using factors such as average yearly salary and percent of salary required to buy a home.
Breakdown Of Tiny House on Foundation Building Permit Review Process Sept. 19th
Well, the fun begins now that we officially have pulled the building permits for our tiny house on foundation in Sarasota, Florida. Here we wanted to break down what our building permit review process involved!
Through the countless phone calls and headaches to zone/building departments for the hard paper work. We felt as though we kept stumbling our way through this process as we have never really worked with the local government before. Our goal was to try and see what we needed to do in order to build a tiny house on @Shellmateisland .
Sarasota feels like a well kept secret. For the past 15 years my family and I have been coming down to Sarasota to get away from the winter months in Cleveland Ohio, it became a special place for me all throughout my life. I ended up living near downtown SRQ for about 2 years and then we bought Tiffany and moved about 25 mins north. Sam and I both missed Sarasota and by fate, Sarasota County does not have any minimum square footage laws for homes. The caveat is that the homes must be constructed to the Florida building codes. Although having these codes is over all a good thing, it does increase cost on materials and labor to pass code. One Example: Windows. You must have impacted rated windows on new construction homes. This could cost 3x the amount money even compared to the upgraded windows on Tiffany! The nice part about all this was, as long as we abide by the codes that were already in place, we could live in the city we love so dearly and have the tiny home lifestyle we choose to live and love. St. Pete Housing Affordability Initiates Move Forward With City Council Approval Sept. 16th, 2019
St. Pete’s building code currently requires multifamily units be of a certain size. Current code requires a minimum of 375 square feet (SF) for studios, 500 SF for one-bedroom units, and 750 SF for a two-bedroom units. Each additional bedroom beyond two-beds requires an additional 200 SF. These minimums are larger than Florida Building Code requirements. By removing the city-specific requirements, the minimum unit size requirements would simply default to to Florida Building Code standards.
This change will allow developers to build smaller units, such as mirco-units, if they see fit. Micro-units are typically one room living units that are smaller than a studio. Think of a hotel room or a student dorm room. To be fair, micro-units aren’t for everyone, but they may be appropriate for some. And because of their small size they are typically more affordable.
Planning looks to change MUD language Sept. 11th, 2019
The town’s Joint Local Planning Agency meeting last Thursday covered a lot of ground, especially with the Minimum Use Determination, of MUD, ordinance.
Staff has presented the Town Council and the Zoning Board with possible solutions to language involving the density requirements. The joint council has agreed on the option to edit the ordinance and add additional qualifier language.
Florida moving toward adopting ‘tiny homes’ building codes August 27th, 2019
The tiny homes proposal is for Florida to adopt the “Appendix Q” regulations offered as draft rules by the International Code Council. The Florida Building Commission has introduced the proposal for its 2020 Florida Building Code, now in process, and there are plenty of public hearings and other steps before they might be adopted. The earliest the commission could vote on the proposed appendix is June of 2020, and the code would not be amended until December 31, 2020.
Paola Set To Tackle Tiny Home Project August 17th, 2019
Paola High School trade and industry teacher Kevin Bronson, who also is the PHS SkillsUSA coach, has a special project planned this year for the dozen or so students in his furniture and cabinet-making class.

Rockledge resident Rene Hardee has been campaigning for tiny houses in her neck of the Brevard woods for the past six months. Rockledge City Council has agreed with Hardee’s idea and made a unanimous motion to move forward with new zoning regulations that would allow the creation of tiny house developments. Now Hardee is looking for a developer interested in creating a pocket neighborhood where she, her husband and their 1- and 3-year-old sons could happily reside.

PERC was one of three finalists for the $50,000 grant, which in in 2017 focused on proposals to start or expand social enterprises. (A social enterprise is project or program run by a nonprofit to meet a need aligned with its mission that also raises money to support the mission.)
The Tiny House company was the unanimous choice of the selection committee and won the grant.
A year later, PERC can’t build tiny houses fast enough. It has agreements with the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and others for multiple houses. The first tiny houses will go to homeless veterans.
