THIA advocate, Melanie Copeland, and the Virginia Tiny Hause Supporters Facebook group have graciously shared their blood, sweat, and tears of countless hours of research for tiny hames living legally as dwellings in Virginia with THIA. They have a private Facebook group of more than three hundred dedicated advocates that are # Making Tiny Possible in Virginia. They have an extensive list that can be accessed when you join their group.
From Melanie Copeland
Having been through the illegal parking side of tiny living, I worked to form a group of people to help find parking in this state! Our group has been quite successful in finding parking and I want to give a fabulous shout out to all the amazing people who have stepped up in their spare time to help make calls and work for legal parking! In no particular order, Roger, Jaycee, Cat, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Mary Elizabeth, Cathie, Gene, Christian, Derryl, Adele, Nancy, Amy, Maria, Prosie! A very special thank you to Lisa who is my team member in arranging meetings, helping with the Facebook page, and hosting events for us! Thank you all for working hard to find and make legal parking information available to everyone!
Here is what we did and continue to do to find parking in Virginia! We created a list of all the counties in the state.
Individuals in those areas volunteered to call RV parks, campgrounds, and zoning and report back to the group on what they found.
Each campground or RV park was vetted with the following information :
Campground name
Did they accept tiny houses on wheels
Did they have on or off-grid options
Cost to stay
Did they require certifications/insurance
Did they accept pets
What is the maximum amount of time a tiny house on wheels can stay?
If they didn’t accept tiny houses then what was the reason or roadblock because if it was a lack of knowledge there might be a way to talk our way in.
We also tracked who we spoke to, so others could talk to the same person if they had to call back.
Melanie, thank you for your work in Virginia and advocating for Tiny Home Owners. I would like to buy a piece of property to create a Tiny Home Park. How do I go about doing that in a county which would allow it. Not sure where to start. Thank you.
Dean,
Where do you want to create the park?
I live in fauquier county, however my last living grandparent lives in ky. (for now), they are thinking about making a tiny house and moving up here with us. The thing is, my husband and I are saving up for a place of our own, we currently live with my father in law, brother in-law & nephew, and a roommate. So the tiny house would need to be movable to get it from ky. have it sit where we are now, then in the next few years move it again to the place hopefully not to far away where the 3 of us can live permanently. And the tiny house can be placed on a permanent foundation. My husband and I love the area we live in, we don’t want to move out of it, but we need help.!. How do we go about finding out how it can be done? And/or who should we talk to about this?

Hi, my son is considering purchasing a tiny house. He wants to place it on his friends property which she already owns. Is this possible in rural Loudoun County VA. Thanks for any help you can provide!!
Lin
I will pass this question on to the Virginia group.
We are considering the same type of situation. Purchasing a tiny home to park on a friends property in Loudoun County, VA. I would love to know what information you find out about this. Thanks

Hi I have a 20 year high functioning Autistic adult son. We are looking for options with tiny home living in mind.. We are currently in the process of looking for a home around the Woodbridge area with hopefully a nice sized backyard. What would be great if there was a tiny home community built for high functioning Autistic adults. Living in VA with limited income does not really give them a lot of options that are affordable, So they usually just live with parents. Any ideas would be helpful. If we can’t go that route I’m hoping to maybe make a shed into a livable nice studio apartment for my son in the backyard. I know for sure a lot of parents with Adult children with autism would be on board with a community like that. Most don’t like roommates and prefer there on space..
